The Natural Science Collections Alliance has joined more than 1,300 museums, organizations, and associations in urging congressional leaders to provide robust federal support for museums and museum-related programs in the fiscal year (FY) 2027 budget.
In a joint letter led by the American Alliance of Museums to congressional leadership, the coalition emphasized the critical role museums play in education, scientific innovation, workforce development, and preservation of the nation’s cultural and scientific heritage, particularly as the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary.
The letter calls for continued support for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), including at least $55 million for the Office of Museum Services, as well as funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Historic Preservation Fund, and STEM education programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The coalition also highlighted findings from a recent Government Accountability Office report showing that nearly 85% of museums face significant maintenance and repair backlogs, with many institutions concerned that deferred maintenance threatens collections stewardship and preservation.
The letter underscores the broad public support for museums and their contributions to local economies, education, and public engagement with science, history, art, and culture.
